Fuel light

Has anyone else had this issue with the fuel light.......I rode my 1997 vfr in the dark for the first time the other day and noticed the fuel light was glowing. (I wasn’t low on fuel). It works fine in that it will illuminate when the fuel level is low. I switched the lights off in case it was light bleed from the dash lights but no change. It did get dimmer and after about 50miles it was almost out. I understand the light works on temperature so, is this the sender unit giving notice to fail?

I agree with the above. It sounds like a bad earth and the temperature as the bike heats up changes the resistance of the bad ground which is why the it got better the further you rode.

As far as I know the sensor is a thermistor which means that when it is submerged in fuel it is kept below the temperature that will create a circuit. As the fuel level drops the sensor will heat up and create the circuit. I believe this is the reason that you cannot replace the bulb with an led item as it they do not draw enough current and will be illuminated all the time. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this issue before I remove the sensor.
